Senegal World Cup squad: News and analysis ahead of team announcement

Africa Cup of Nations champions Senegal will be hoping to progress from Group A, which also features the Netherlands, Ecuador and host nation Qatar.

The side has World Cup pedigree, despite this being only their third appearance at the biggest tournament in the sport. In 2002, they shocked the world by beating holders France and reached the last eight, although they suffered a disappointing group stage exit in 2018, despite losing to Poland in their opening game.

Aliou Cisse has a lot of talent to call upon. Sadio Mane is their star player and record goalscorer, while Watford striker Ismaila Sarr is poised to win his 50th international cap despite being 24 years old.

Ten players in Cisse’s most recent international squad are based in England, with the majority of his players stationed in Europe.

Cisse will perhaps be concerned by the recent form of Chelsea duo Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, however. Mendy lost his place in Graham Potter’s squad to Kepa Arrizabalaga, while skipper Koulibaly is clearly still adapting to the Premier League following his move from Napoli.
