Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s progress has been amazing to see. After breaking the fourth wall and grabbing the world’s attention with Fleasthen refresh the small screen spy drama with Kill EveShe has blown away to a galaxy far, far away in android form Solo: A Star Wars Storyaccommodating SNLand brush in 007’s dialogue No Time to Die. Next stop: Indiana Jones 5, where she will play a central role in Harrison Ford’s last outing wearing a fedora. In the adventure set in Indy in 1969, she enters the fray as Helena – none other than Henry Jones Jr.’s goddaughter.

“She’s a mystery and a wonder,” Waller-Bridge said Empire, teasing his role which is mostly under-wraps. Indeed, there are plenty of adjectives to describe Helena. According to new director James Mangold, she is “slippery, charming, girl-next-door, grifter”. Per Harrison Ford himself, she is a “pioneer in ethical accounting”. And for the actor, it all stemmed from a conversation with the legendary producer Kathleen Kennedy. “Kathy was in London and she asked to have lunch with me, and she mentioned this quite frankly,” recalls Waller-Bridge. “I immediately ordered ten bottles of wine. Then this is the fastest I’ve ever read a script; I then came out of some haze. I couldn’t believe how much fun I had and how much feeling I had. And then I got Zoom and screamed, ‘YES!’ in the Centre.”

For Mangold, a key reference point for Waller-Bridge in bringing Helena to life was Barbara Stanwyck’s role in the 1941 screwball comedy The Lady of the Night (“I was like, ‘Oh yeah, sure, I’ll do my Barbara Stanwyck’,” laughed Waller-Bridge. “IT’S BECOMING AN IMPOSSIBLE LOOK.”) But among all the conning and comedy also came the chance to jump into the kind of giant set-piece that the Indiana Jones films do best. “Honestly, I loved it,” he said. “When you’re playing a character who throws himself on the back of a vehicle, there’s no acting around that. You have to bloody do it.” Helena’s mystery and wonder is about to unfold.
