Keene, NH, offers comfort food, public art and live entertainment

Keene may be known as a college town, but it offers much more than meets the eye.

IN DINNER WITH THE PAST. >> 8 AM ON THE ROAD, LUNCH TIME. IN NEW KEENE CARMARTHENSHIRE, IT MEANS ONE THING AND ONE THING – AND ONE PLACE. >> IT HAS BEEN HERE SINCE 1961 AND WE ARE THE FOURTH OWNERS. >> LINDY’S IS ALSO MY FAVORITE, ONE THAT HAS BEEN CLOSED, SAVED AND REOPENED. >> THE NEW OWNERS TOOK OVER IN 2019 JUST BEFORE COVID HIT. >> WE TRIED OURSELVES WHAT WE THOUGHT, WHEN THEY WERE SHUTTING US DOWN FIRST WE LOOKED AT EACH OTHER, AND SAID MYSELF, BUT WE HAVE AN AMAZING STAFF AND WE COULD DO THAT TONIGHT. >> IT ALSO HELPS THAT THEY HAVE HAD LOYAL LOCALS FOLLOWING BUILDING FOR OVER 60 YEARS. >> LINDY’S HAS EVERYTHING. >> THE BREAKFAST, AS BIG AND CONFIDENT AS MY LAST VISIT. >> HOMEMADE HASH, MY HAPPY PLACE. AND HOW’S THIS FOR A HAPPY LATEST ACT FOR CO-OWNER STUBBS CAROL, A NATIVE WHO USED TO COME HERE AS A CHILD. >> ON OUR BIKES WE’LL COME DOWN, DRINK AND HANG OUT AND DO HER THING. >> THE TRUTH IS, CHESTERSHIRE’S ONLY CITY OF KEENE, POPULATION JUST UNDER 23,000 IS A LIVING PLACE OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY, ITS PROFILE THESE DAYS AND ITS FLAVORS ARE CHANGING. >> THERE IS A LARGE POPULATION OF FILIPINO PEOPLE HERE, SOUTH AMERICANS, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE FROM JAMAICA. >> THIS MAN WHO GOT UP IN INDIA IS RAISING HIS FAMILY NOW IN THE KEENE AREA, IN 2021 AS HE AND HIS WIFE LAUNCH KEENE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS TO HELP THE LOCAL WINNING POPULATION FILL THE VOID THEY ARE FIND MORE MARKETS. >> HAVE YOU TRIED THIS BEFORE? I WANT THIS PLACE TO BE A COMMUNITY PLACE WHERE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE COME HERE AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS THEY WANT TO OFFER OR WHAT THEY HAVE SEEN SOMEWHERE. >> CURRENTLY, PRODUCTS FROM MORE THAN 30 COUNTRIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE SHELVES, PINS AND FEEZERS ARE MANUFACTURED HERE. AND IT IS ENCOURAGED TO BE FULL OF LOCAL NEEDS. >> I’LL BE HERE AND I CAN SEE PEOPLE IN THE BACK LIKE OH MY GOD THEY’VE DONE THIS, THEY’VE DONE THAT. >> FOR OTHER VISITORS, IT IS GOOD TO ASK WHAT IS THIS? >> THIS IS A RESULT OF RON PATHAN’S DEMAND. >> IT’S SORT OF A CROSS BETWEEN GRAIN AND PARRY. A small bite? >> HEALTH. >> ALTHOUGH KEENE INTERNATIONAL MARKET MIMICS SOME PERCEPTIONS, VISITORS CAN’T MISS THE LARGE MURAL PAPERS ON THE SIDES OF MANY BUILDINGS HERE. DESIGNED AND PAINTED BY THE WELL-KNOWN WILD DOG MURAL ARTISTS IN 2019, EACH MARK A UNIQUE AND SIGNIFICANT ELEMENT IN KEENE’S HISTORY. ONE IN PARTICULAR CAUGHT OUR EYE. >> JENNY POWERS, HUMANE SOCIETY AGENT WORKING IN THIS COMMUNITY. SHE IS A WOMAN WITHOUT ANY FEAR AND IS BECOMING KNOWN NATIONALLY AS THE WOMAN WHO HAS AND RECOGNIZES AS HAVING BEEN BROKEN BY MORE MEN THAN ANY OTHER WOMAN IN THE COUNTRY. >> DO YOU CONSIDER HER THE FIRST WOMAN DEPUTY SHERIFF? THE BADGE IS A BIG PART OF THE STORY. >> IT IS. >> HER OWN LIFE HAS BEEN CONNECTED WITH TRAGEDY, JENNY POWERS CAME INTO THE OPEN WEATHER PROMOTION TO HARM AND PROTECT ABUSED ANIMALS OR CHILDREN. >> THIS IS ONE WOMAN WHO REACHED OUTSIDE HER COMFORT ZONE TO MAKE YOUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE. >> JUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE MURAL IS SOMETHING THAT ALSO MAKES KEENE A BETTER PLACE FOR THE LAST 100 YEARS, THE HISTORIC RELIGIOUS THEATER THAT OPENED IN 1924 AS A MOVIE HOUSE FELL ON HARD ENVIRONMENTS IN THE 70’S AND 80’S. BUT, WAS SAVED IN THE LATE 90’S BY RECREATING IT AS NON-PROFILE. AND BY A CITY HE WAS DETERMINED NOT TO LOSE IT. >> ANY TOWN THAT SURVIVES, AND I SAY PROSPER AS THE COLONIST, HAS A THEATER WITHIN — BECAUSE OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT. 100% >> IN 2020, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WAS DEPENDENT ON THAT SUPPORT TO OVERSEE A MAJOR RENOVATION OF THE COUNTRY THEATER. FROM ITS ORIGINAL HOUSE AND WORKS TO ITS ENTRANCE AREA AND ITS LOBBY. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT HAS A STAGE AND FLIGHT SPACE, WHICH ENABLES THE THEATER TO DO BIG TOURING PRODUCTIONS LIKE STOMP. >> THE STAGE HOUSE HAS BEEN EXTENDED. >> BEHIND THEIR OWN HISTORIC THEATER, THEY’RE ALSO OPENING A SHOWROOM, A SMALLER PERFORMANCE VENUE APPROPRIATELY NAMED FOR THE LONG-TIME CAR DEALERSHIP THAT ONCE OWNED. WHAT IS STILL HERE AND CONTINUES TO FUEL ALL THIS IS STRONG COMMUNITY SUPPORT FROM A SMALL CITY THAT HAS STANDED TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME. >> I THINK IN MANY WAYS, KEENE IS A UNIQUE PLACE IN THE COLONIAL, VERY AFFORDABLE TO BE LOCATED SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. >> AND THE RESIDENTS OF KEENE WELL HAVE PLAYED A BIG ROLE IN THE REVIVAL OF THE THEATER, SO HAVE THE RESIDENTS OF MASSACHUSETTS. KEENE IS ONLY A SHORT DRIVE OVER THE NEW HAMPS BORDER. >> IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE GIRL WHO HAS JENNY POWERS, I’M CER
